For intermittent cooling of variable speed air conditioners, the indoor air temperature rising during the off-period results in EER dropping in the starting-up stage. Thus, the average EER of the variable speed air conditioner for the intermittent cooling mode is lower than that for the continuous cooling mode. So, it is a controversial issue whether the intermittent operation can definitely reduce the power consumption of the variable speed air conditioner. Taking a south-oriented room of an apartment on middle floor in Shanghai as the research object, analyses the characteristics of the cooling capacity and the power consumption during the intermittent cooling of the variable speed air conditioner by testing. The results show that the intermittent cooling of the variable speed air conditioner can reduce the cooling capacity, but it may not necessarily reduce the power consumption.
